Why am I doing this?

Hi,

If you are reading this, there are three likely culprits:

  1. You like music.
  2. You know me, and want to see why I started a music blog.
  3. You stumbled across this on accident, and are thinking about leaving.

Regardless of the reason, you are here. Before we begin, I need to clear up a few things. Firstly, I am not a professional music critic. This is a hobby, and as a fallible human being my opinions as expressed on this blog carry only as much weight as you choose to give them. Secondly, my tastes are likely different from yours. Please bear with me. Thirdly, my actual job consists of pursuing a PhD in a highly technical field, and as such my updates to this blog will likely be irregularly spaced. Again, please bear with me.

So, I have been listening to music for a long period of time, as I would expect most people have. The story for why I decided to blog about music developed much more recently. Back in November 2016, I started a playlist with weekly updates on Spotify called “The Cardboard 25”. This was my take on a top 100 type chart, where I arranged the 25 songs that I wanted to listed to the most in a given week in order, and tracked how well every song “charted” over time. No one ever followed it, but it became a regular way for me to decompress, and the statistics nerd in me was equally interested. The playlist has been updated weekly-ish on Thursdays-ish since this time, and is currently (as of this initial posting) in its 94th iteration.

Over the nearly two years that I have been curating this playlist (essentially for myself) I have developed a more acute knowledge of why I like the music that I do. I have made an array of other blogs in the past, but none of them were really about anything. I like expressing my thoughts in word form, and as such it seemed like now would be a good time to combine these two disparate hobbies (i.e. liking music and liking blogging) into a single thing: hence “Vinny’s Music Blog”.

As this is new, I will be experimenting a bunch with different formats and playlist types. For starters, here is the aforementioned “Cardboard 25”. This is the best way to introduce you to my tastes as of right now. Hopefully you enjoy it.

I will be posting more (including some reviews and other stuff) in the near future.

-Vinny
